This was a last-minute cake for a couple who nearly share a birthday. I got the info that a surprise party was going to happen for them almost 24-hours in advance. No problem! The top is dark chocolate and the bottom is white. The cake had raspberry filling and was covered in white chocolate icing and butter cream fondant. The decorations were butter cream and chocolate fondant. They were surprised when everyone showed up at their house!

The making of Africa!

A good friend was leaving for Africa for two years to work at an orphanage in Zambia. I wanted to make her going away party special, so I did this.

It is chocolate and white cake with dark chocolate butter cream and raspberry filling. Covered in butter cream icing and butter cream fondant. All the decorations were hand made and edible. Good luck Andrea!!

As a side note: this was the largest (mass) cake I've ever made and was well over 50 pounds!!

This was a little celebratory cake for a couple that eloped just before the groom shipped out. It was white and chocolate (by layer) with raspberry filling and butter cream icing covered in butter cream fondant. It was a hit.

This cake was for a Justin Bieber fan. He's like the New Kids On The Block for this generation I'm told... I did a lot of research for this one as I knew nothing of him.

I sculpted the figure and all and it turned out pretty well.

The bottom was white cake with milky way filling and the top was chocolate with chocolate filling. It all had butter cream icing and butter cream fondant. Entirely edible. The birthday girl loved it so much, she kept the figure and it is in her freezer!

Cake balls or cake pops (on a stick) are the new cupcake in the cake world. They are fully baked cake, mixed with icing and covered in chocolate. And let me say that they are G*O*O*D!! Every flavor I've tried has been fantastic and well received. Below are some examples of recent cake balls (the descriptions are below each picture):

Wouldn't you know, I'd start with something that isn't even cake.. These are oreo balls. Oreo cookies, cream cheese, covered in white chocolate. Wow! That'll get cha.

I haven't been posting on here much lately because I've been designing a new cake website and considering getting licensed. So far, I've been doing cakes for people I know or friends of friends. And I just make them for what they cost me, this way I don't get into tax trouble. I really like making cakes. So, I've decided to go ahead and launch an actual business, get the license, and be legit. Yeah, that means I have to charge more, but I'll still like making the cakes too! The tiniest celebration.

This cake was for a baby shower for a little girl born at 26 weeks! She was 1 lb 10 oz and has been in the NICU for months, but doing very well and is projected to come home in just three weeks. When my son was born, he had a short stay in the NICU and was in the room right next to little Alex. At 7 lbs, he seemed like a giant in comparison. Alex's mom happens to work with a very good friend of mine and I told her that I'd make a special cake when they were able to celebrate.

This one was a four layer lemon cake with raspberry filling and butter cream icing. The decorations were made from fondant, including the flap, handle, and pockets. I'm sure it was a great celebration of a tiny little life.

One Week Wedding

This wedding was VERY last minute. A friend of a friend needed a wedding cake and hadn't booked anyone a week before the wedding. I agreed to do it, but it was a stretch to get all the prep work done in a week (not normally, but being 9 months pregnant and having a one-year old adds a lot).

She wanted a white cake with butter cream icing and roses. I like the look of the chocolate roses and people can actually eat them, which is nice. After all that work I want people to enjoy them. I had a couple of friends who came and helped me work on roses, leaves, and petals throughout the week, which was a huge help. I finished the final ones Friday night, just in time to let them dry overnight and place them Saturday. The cake was delivered exactly one week (to the hour) after it was ordered. Not sure I'd do that again, but they were happy with it, so that counts for something...

Our niece Addison recently turned 4 and to celebrate we made the 5-hour trip to make her a Hello Kitty cake. We haven't been able to celebrate with her for her birthday since our wedding (which was just days before her 1st birthday) so this needed to be special. I decided to try my first ever topsy turvy cake for her because she such a spunky little girl. She asked for pink and chocolate cake, so this one is strawberry on the bottom and chocolate on the top, all with butter cream icing. The decorations are fondant, except the rings (which the little girls loved) and the Hello Kitty candle. It turned out pretty well for my first try.

These mini cupcakes were pumpkin cinnamon with cream-cheese icing and glazed pecans on top. They were made will real (from the pumpkin) pumpkin that my neighbor brought me. Wow! I didn't realize what a difference using non-canned pumpkin really makes. The pecans were also a very yummy touch. The two offices these went too gave great reviews.

These 4 giant cupcakes were for the birthday of the sister of a lady my husband works with (wow...). She ordered them just the afternoon before she needed them, which made them a quick job. They are dark chocolate with butter cream icing. The simple decorations are white dragees and m&ms. Go Colts!!

Thomas the Train

While I consider Thomas the Train to be a rather disturbing cartoon, MANY kids love it. I wasn't surprised when a grandmother ordered these cupcakes for her grandson's 4th birthday.

The cupcakes were dark chocolate with butter cream icing. The decorations are fondant and trains are plastic Thomas figures. I like to give little ones something to keep after the cake is done.

This golf cake was for the 50th birthday of a big golf fan. The cake is yellow with lemon filling and butter cream icing. The decorations are mainly fondant, but I had to get plastic golf balls (around the bottom) and golf bag because I only had a couple of days notice on this one. It should feed around 30 people and I hope it makes his birthday special.

She loves her furry puppy and that's about her only obsession at this point, so I decided to make her a replica. These are two more of the cupcake styles from the awards ceremony.
The ants go marching...are chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting and chocolate covered almonds and blueberries for the ants. The ants are carrying fruit slices (sugared).

The apples are spice cupcakes with mini-donuts on top, frosted with vanilla icing and topped with a tootsie roll and laffy taffy in the shape of a leaf.

These pies are vanilla cupcakes with m&ms for the pie filling (green apple, peach, cherry, blueberry) and vanilla frosting for the pie crust.

I was asked to make refreshments for a middle school (end of the year) awards ceremony. I got the budget and made up some possible menu suggestions when I got the best idea. Cupcakes, fun ones (125 to be exact)... Middle schoolers would love it, and they did! The next few posts are all cupcakes from that event (I just can't get them all in one post).

MONSTER Truck

This truck was for a little boy that was turning 4 and LOVES monster trucks, especially The Grave Digger. The cake was fudge marble with vanilla almond butter cream icing (with LOTS of black food coloring). It's all edible except the trucks, cars, and supports. The most difficult part were the treads, wow... but after a few tries, it worked out.

Broken Eggs!!

Isn't it frustrating when you get home from the store only to find that your eggs are broken??? UGH!!

Well, it's a good thing these aren't real eggs then.

These are mini cupcakes that I made for my step-mother-in-law's birthday. She's a fun lady who works in managing resources and also helps my father-in-law with his hobby farm, (including egg laying chickens). I thought she'd get a kick out of these.

They are white mini-cupcakes with smooth cream cheese icing. The yolks are homemade lemon curd and the shells are white chocolate. It was very challenging to get the eggs to turn out properly. I used plastic Easter eggs, greased with Crisco as the molds. I then melted white chocolate and painted the inside of the eggs, let them sit, repeat painting, then let them cool. Sliding them out proved a challenge, but it just takes time and patience. The end result was a lot of fun and VERY tasty.

I recently bought a new book full of great cupcake ideas. I get stuck on fondant decorations, but this book has some really good prop ideas. These were the first set I tried and they were a HUGE hit.

I made them for the seniors at the school I taught at last year. They are a good group of kids and I wanted to do something fun for them in their last few weeks as high schoolers.

There are white and chocolate cupcakes with white and chocolate icing. The hats are small peanut butter cups (up-side-down) with a chocolate covered graham cracker on top. The tassels are piped icing in their school color. The hair is made from a variety of things; sprinkles, sugar, icing, gum, fruit loops... and the ears are orange fruit loops.

I'm not sure if all the heads were the right color or shape, but their were 40+ graduate heads and they were enjoyed!

Fit for a princess...

This cake was for a little princess' 4th birthday. She went to Disney Land over the summer and really loved it. She wanted a cake for her birthday that reminded her of her fun trip. She loves pink and wanted strawberry cake so that the inside would be pink too.

This cake should feed between 35 - 40 people, is strawberry with almond butter cream icing, and has fondant decorations. The figurines are from Disney for her to keep after her party. Most little girls love princesses and I hope this princess cake makes Makena's 4th birthday really special.

I made Tinkerbell and Hello Kitty cakes late last year for two sweet little girls. Their mom is a good friend of mine and she LOVED their special cakes. She picked them up, ooooed and ahhhhhed over them and left. On her way home, she called and asked if she could book me for her cake too. I was delighted to make this special cake for her. She is one of those selfless moms who eagerly takes care of her family, without regard for herself.

I told her that she could choose whatever she wanted for her birthday and so she did. She chose an Italian creme cake with cream cheese icing. She also mentioned that she loves roses and chocolate. I made the roses, leaves, and sign out of home made chocolate plastic (white and milk chocolate) and finished it off with fresh berries and chopped pecans. I hope she loves this cake and feels very special as she is celebrated! Happy Birthday Ruth!

I can say that I know far more about Pokemon now than I ever thought possible... A few weeks ago Adam and I met a family at the park while playing with Phoebe. The little boy is a brain cancer patient and is almost done with his treatment. The father had just been in a serious roll-over accident... This family had been through a lot recently and meeting them tugged at my heart. I wanted to do something to help, but the only thing I could think of was cake. I mentioned it to her and her face lightened up. The boy's birthday was coming soon and he LOVED Pokemon. Done.

He wanted half white and half chocolate, so I made 4 small cakes (2 white, 2 chocolate) and balanced a square white cake on top. Each small cake has the theme of one of his favorite 4 characters and the trainer of these little guys is on the top. The icing was almond, vanilla butter cream and I the decorations are fondant (not the characters). I hope this brightens his special 7th birthday!

Sorry for the beautiful orange background... The kitchen I had to set up in was bright.

We had a baby shower for one of Adam's cousins (Welcome to the jungle cake) and I met his cousin's (Joe) fiance. We got to talking about their upcoming wedding and she mentioned that she couldn't find someone to make her a gluten-free wedding cake for any reasonable cost, and she was thinking of trying to make her own... Bad idea for a bride to have that on her plate on her wedding day... I offered my services to her as our wedding gift and she accepted. I made the top layer of the bride's cake vanilla (gluten-free) and the rest was classic white. The bride's cake had vanilla-almond butter cream icing with dragees and flowers and the groom's cake was chocolate with chocolate-fudge butter cream icing with hand dipped strawberries (notice the his and hers strawberries, that was fun to make). It smelled good enough to eat!

Double Trouble

This was a fun cake for a set of twins that were turning three. They love elephants and zebras, so I designed this fun cake using what they liked. All edible, except the wires for the balloons. The cake was white with almond butter cream icing, fondant decorations, and yummy Pepperidge Farm pirouettes for the fence around the swimming elephant.

It's no secret that I'm a girly girl. I did not grow up with brothers and don't know much about little boys, so this cake was a bit of a challenge. It was for the son of a woman Adam works with, he was turning 6 and LOVES superheros. Superman is his favorite, so I had to give him a special place on the cake. I wanted to get him real action figures so that he could play with them after the cake was cut so there are plastic action figures along with the fondant decorations (city, street lights, action figure symbols, and wreckage around Superman's car) on this cake. The cake was chocolate fudge with butter cream icing. I never realized how difficult it is to get those little figures to stand up! I ended up having to wire each one to a dowel rod and stick it into the cake. I better get used to this if we ever have a little boy.

This cake was for a girl who was turning 15 and loved Paris and pink. Just so happens, I speak French and also like Paris and pink. The cake was white with almond butter cream icing and the decorations are all edible (minus the wires for the flowers). The stem of the flower says, he loves me...he loves me not... (hence the petals) and the ribbon around the middle of the cakes says, that's life...and life is beautiful.

It's no secret that I love to bake and love to decorate cakes. My love for the art of food started as a little child when I used to use the kitchen table, graham crackers, and my hands as canvasses for frosting (after my mom finished cakes). We used to get up on chairs and be allowed to add ingredients to the bowl of whatever yummy thing my mom was making, and I love, love, love the smell of cooking goodness at my Grandma Boge's house. It's no wonder I love to make food fun with kids.

One of my good friends (Cara) from church recently had a beautiful baby boy (Seth). I went to visit and make some cupcakes with Joy, so that she could have some food fun with cupcakes. We frosted them and added words and sprinkles. I forgot how much fun just throwing sprinkles on cupcakes could be, but as I watched her face, it put a smile on mine.

No, this isn't for my portfolio, I won't charge a pretty penny for them, and probably couldn't recreate them if I tried, but Joy, Cara, Phoebe, and I had fun!

This cake was for my brother-in-law's basketball team. They won district, bi-district, area, and regional quarter-finals. This cakes was for them after their Regional semi-finals game (whether they won or not) to celebrate their great season! It was a white cake with butter cream icing and fondant decorations. For some reason the pictures make it look blue, but I guarantee it is very purple. Go Wildcats!!

This cake was for the 18th birthday of one of my husband's students. She was VERY excited to find someone who could (not would... could) make her cake. In her initial e-mail to me, she started it with, "well, I'm allergic to life..." and then proceeded to tell me all the things she couldn't have. She likes blue and green and hearts... For me, not much to go on. This is her gluten-free chocolate and vanilla cake with butter cream icing and fondant decorations. Man... I hope this is a special cake and birthday for her.

This cake was so much fun to make. The little animals took well...a long time, but they turned out well. It was for a baby shower for a little girl (Zoe) to be born in April. Her parents are using animals in her nursery and didn't want pink. The cake was chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry; something for every taste. Sister Cakes

Sofia wanted Tinkerbell and a white cake. That's what she got. The Tinkerbell figurine becomes a backpack pull and the rest of the decorations were made from fondant.

Ana wanted Hello Kitty and a white cake as well. Her figurine was a bubble container and their were some plastic Hello Kitty rings, but the rest of the decorations were edible (except the wires for the flowers).

This was for 2 year-old twins and was gluten-free chocolate and vanilla with butter cream icing and fondant decorations. This was a special cake to make as these twins were born preemies at only 24-weeks! What a special day to celebrate with them.

She loved flower baskets and yellow cake. I got the order on short notice, so I didn't have time to make fondant flowers, so I made her the yellow cake with all butter cream icing and decorations. She loved it!

A Tiny Outdoor Wedding

This wedding cake was for a second marriage and there were only 15-20 guests, but they wanted a special cake to celebrate. Each layer was a different flavor, chocolate, almond, and strawberry. The icing was butter cream and the only thing not edible was the ribbon. It looked really beautiful outdoors in a little gazebo.

This was a wedding in Texas. She wanted elegant, he loved poker... we made it work for both of them. Her cake was white with butter cream (seems that this is what most people prefer) and his was chocolate with butter cream icing and fondant work. Hers had real flowers, ribbons, and pearls to accent the elegant scroll work. Although, I loved her cake, my favorite part was making the beer mugs and painting the playing cards.

This cake was for the wedding of some friends I met in Morocco. The whole cake was white with butter cream (the groom had chocolate Texas sheet cakes - I didn't take pictures). The florist forgot the cake flowers so we took apart some of our corsages and boutonnieres and made it work. Turned out pretty well even without the official topper.

I'd never seen an armadillo before making this cake, but they are not pretty creatures! The cake was tasty though, it had to be a true "bleeding armadillo" so it was a red velvet cake with butter cream icing. The head, feet, and tail were made from gum paste. With a little molding and paint, it looked pretty real.

My mom taught me the basics of cake decorating by allowing me (and my sisters) to practice with her left over frosting and graham crackers on the kitchen table as a child. I didn't really do much with it until a few years back when I became really interesting in techniques and new methods of making cakes into special works of art. I've been enjoying working with different materials and gaining confidence over the years. I thought this would be a good venue to show some of them and for people looking to book cakes.
